#041 – Fake News & Post Truth with Gleb Tsipursky
Are we living in a post-truth era? What is “fake news,” and what problems does it pose to critical thinkers and reason-oriented activists? What is the alternative to “alternative facts”? In this episode, we speak with Dr. Gleb Tsipursky, a consultant, speaker, and author who specializes in behavioral science and the psychology of decision-making. Dr. Tsipursky is the President of the non-profit organization Intentional Insights, dedicated to advocating for truth and reason in politics. He is the author and organizer of the Pro-Truth Pledge, part of a movement designed to reverse the tide of lies and fake news in politics and the wider culture by providing incentives to public figures to base their statements on verifiable truth.
Fake News definition:
Fake news is a type of yellow journalism that consists of deliberate misinformation or hoaxes spread via traditional print and broadcast news media or online social media. Fake news is written and published with the intent to mislead in order to gain financially or politically, often with sensationalist, exaggerated, or patently false headlines that grab attention. Intentionally misleading and deceptive fake news is different from obvious satire or parody which is intended to humor rather than mislead its audience.
Post Truth Definition:
Post-truth politics (also called post-factual politics) is a political culture in which debate is framed largely by appeals to emotion disconnected from the details of policy, and by the repeated assertion of talking points to which factual rebuttals are ignored. Post-truth differs from traditional contesting and falsifying of truth by rendering it of “secondary” importance. While this has been described as a contemporary problem, there is a possibility that it has long been a part of political life, but was less notable before the advent of the Internet. In the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, George Orwell cast a world in which the state changes historic records daily to fit its propaganda goals of the day.
